3 out of 5 stars Heavy duty - and I mean "heavy"   September 6, 2010
didirider
I bought this lock because of it's thickness and it's shorter length.

The trade-off is the heavy weight, which gets tough when you add groceries to your load after a day at the shops.

Yes, the keys do look flimsy, so please be careful with them. I took the advice of the other reviewers and I'm VERY careful with the key. You need to make sure the key is in as far as you can get it AND don't try to turn the key until you can feel the key readily turn.

The shorter length also means you have to be selective about where/how you lock the bike up. If you use Sheldon Brown's lock strategy, you have to make sure the bike is really close to the post that you plan to lock against. Your bike will be very snug up against the post.

3 out of 5 stars A 'don't mess with me' lock with a few drawbacks   August 19, 2010

I bought this lock to protect my Specialized Hardrock Sport in the bike theft happy region of greater Chicagoland. Checking my local journal (The Wednesday Journal of Oak Park, IL) will show bikes get stolen near me at the rate of 3-5 a week. Having a lock, and a solid one at that, is pretty much a must.

I chose this lock because it was recommended to my by my bike mechanic. It is a very sturdy, heavy duty lock that screams "look elsewhere" at any potential crook. Since most bike thieves steal based on convenience, chances are good that this lock is sufficient to deter any potential thief, unless you're locking up some 10k custom bike.

PROs:

1) Very sturdy design
2) Comes with 4 keys, meaning you can have a couple on key chains and a few more in reserve 'just in case'
3) Easy to open and close
4) Comes with an anti-theft guarantee for up to 10k for a un-powered bike

Cons:

1) The bike mount attachment (to connect the lock to the bike) is majorly flawed. It relies on a plastic inset to tighten a nylon band around one of the poles of your bike. It does not tighten sufficiently, and once attached, cannot be removed without damaging the plastic inset. It's a terrible design! Additionally, the lock clip which attaches the lock to to the mount sticks all the time, making taking the lock on and off a real hassle. Sad that they combined such a great lock with such a crappy attachment. I just carry the lock in my backpack, which isn't ideal, but works.

2) The lock is very heavy. That's to be expected since it's beefy, but if you're worried about weight, this is probably among the heaviest U-locks you can find.

Conclusions:

This is a solid lock that will keep your bike safe. The mounting attachment is very poor however. I'd still recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars So far so good   August 16, 2010

I had this lock for about 2 months now. It's of course impossible to say how good a lock is at doing its job until you've either had a bike stolen or seen the saw-marks of some unsuccessful attempt, but I can say that in terms of usability the lock is good. The key turns freely, everything seems sturdy, and I feel like it's a good weight and size.

4 out of 5 stars Not for puny road bikes!   August 14, 2010
Allison
This thing is a beast - too much of a beast for my puny road bike. At 4 pounds, it added a considerably fraction of weight to my bike. It would be better suited for scooters and motorcycles. I returned it, but not because it was a bad product - I just didn't realize how heavy it was and didn't choose correctly for my bike. I got their mini version instead.

I'm sure for a scooter, motorcycle or even heavy/expensive mountain bikes this thing would offer great protection. From the looks of it, no one will even approach this thing. But it wasn't right for me. :/

2 out of 5 stars Strong Lock, Defective Holder   August 2, 2010
thewaz
The plastic lock holder that is supposed to hold the lock on the frame broke after just 3 weeks of normal use. The weight of the lock is way too much for the plastic to handle, and it chipped away at the holder until it was useless. Now there is no easy way to carry this beast of a lock, short of a backpack or basket.
