Product Description
The Wald 582 sets the standard for ingenuity when it comes to rear baskets. Mounting to the side of almost any rear rack, this nimble basket is the perfect size for packing 1-2 bags of groceries while balancing your load. When not in use, the base of the basket pivots up allowing the side walls to collapse. A simple clamp at the top of the side panels keeps everything secured while the basket is folded up to one inch thick

5 out of 5 stars A+   July 1, 2010

It was exactly what I expected.

I have a Schwinn Ladies' Delmar bike like the pic of the pink bike offered here. Since the rear bike rack is too thick to attach the baskets correctly, I drilled a couple holes on each side of the reach and turned the brackets upside down and screw it through the rack instead of around the basket itself.

I then went to a locale store where they gave me some of those plastic ties that use to tie down valuable things in the store (like computer programs and flash drives that are hanging on a sales rack). I used those to secure the lower portion of the basket to my bike.

It is working great and I always get comments on great my bike looks.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Baskets!   June 15, 2010

These Wald baskets are pretty amazing. For something that folds up so compactly, they sure do hold quite a bit. I love the fact that I can have something on my bicycle to carry loads when I need to, but that also doesn't hang out, occupying space when I just want to ride without items in the baskets. My trial run to the grocery store yielded positive results for me. With the exception that the bicycle is obviously heavier carrying the extra poundage in the baskets, I really don't notice them being there. I think these are a perfect fit for someone who doesn't want panniers, but who perhaps needs to carry things while riding.

My bicycle is an upright/dutch style bicycle, so I don't have any issues with the peddles hitting the baskets when open, but if you have another style bicycle, you may need to adjust them to allow them to function. They are working brilliantly for me though.

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to using   May 24, 2010

I'm looking forward to using my baskets to haul groceries home from local supermarket. The baskets appear well constructed and I like the folding design. The cost of the baskets and excellent construction makes them well worth the price. I would have given them five stars but the hardware that came with them is crap. They need to work on another design. It did not work on my Topeak Explorer rack and I had to improvise by using #8 stainless steel hose clamps and 5/8" heater hose. I cut a small piece of hose about as wide as the clamp and used that between the clamp and the basket. I didn't want metal on metal. I used a tie wrap on the lower support instead of the U clamp supplied. It works just fine and doesn't rattle.

4 out of 5 stars Good value, work well with other mounting hardware   May 13, 2010

These Wald baskets work great IF you use mounting hardware other than what comes with the product. Especially good for groceries in a bag like the reusable bags that many grocery chains offer for $1 or so which can be loosely tied at the top and thus keep things from spilling at every bump in the road. The simple clip that allows one to stow the baskets out of the way folded works surprisingly well!

I had two "spare" sets of Arkel rack mounting hardware with integrated bungee cords that turn these into wonderful folding side baskets. This mounting hardware is much simpler, and was much less expensive, than current Arkel hardware (spares were about $15 a set a few years ago).

Is there an equivalent mounting kit available elsewhere today? I tried modifying the included hardware, having the Arkel kits I quickly quit doing the mods. By using any kind of removable clips, you can also adjust the basket to fit more aft of your riding position and avoid clipping the baskets with your heels. Even on my Giant LaFree Lite, which has an extension of the frame for the battery pack, centering the basket on the rack results in my size 11 shoes clipping the bottom of the basket.

Overall, the basket is well built but the mounting of these baskets to the rack wasn't easy. I used heavy duty plastic ties all over the place to secure it. My grip is that the clip used to keepthe basket in the folded positon is so small, it was quite difficult to unlatch it. They should have made the latches a little bigger and easier to use.
